Former Sioux Falls mayor Rick Knobe: There are bright lights that shine through the dark times in our world today

Former Sioux Falls mayor Rick Knobe: There are bright lights that shine through the dark times in our world today

It’s been too long since my last post about bright lights. The good things going on that don’t get much attention.

Frankly, most recent news has been distressing. Not much to be happy about.

However, a few items have caught my attention.

First is the election this week in New York. Citizens voted to elect the replacement for George Santos, the expelled, lying former congressmen.

They chose a former congressman, Tom Suozzi. A moderate. A Democrat. He has years of government experience, including time as a mayor and county administrative.

He’s been in the trenches. I like that.

The Republican majority in the House is now razor-thin. That’s good for the country, and for us.

Second, is the unanimous decision by a three-member federal appeals court that Donald Trump does NOT have immunity from the allegations of his insurrection charges relating to Jan. 6, 2021. It is under appeal. No word as of this writing if the Supreme Court will hear the case (Editor’s note: The U.S. Supreme Court yesterday agreed to hear the case).

Third, a citizen put himself in harm’s way on Valentine’s Day in Kansas City. He chased down one of the alleged shooters at the Kansas City Chiefs’ celebration party. Sadly, one person died, and several were wounded or injured, including children.

I’m not suggesting any of you do this if you find yourself in that situation, but it is good to know there are still people out there willing to do the right thing by protecting others.

I’m sure there are other bright lights (as symbolized by the public domain image above, posted on wikimedia commons) to report. We all need a little good news today, and every day.

Godspeed.

Rick Knobe is a former mayor of Sioux Falls and a longtime radio talk show host, now retired.
