“Sassy, sultry,” show comes to Rapid City in June

“Sassy, sultry,” show comes to Rapid City in June

Rapid Citians are on tap for a performance of Acute Inflections on June 27. This high-energy show comes from New York and gets enthusiastic reviews, which say it “dazzles and inspires,”   that it’s “sophisticated and sassy,”  and that the performing duo has a sultry sound and fashionable flair.”

The producers caught my attention with a blurb about the show, so I asked them to send me more of a write-up to share here. This sounds like something I want to see:

On a summer evening in Rapid City, something a little unexpected is set to unfold. Not just a concert, but an experience that blends music, storytelling, humor, and human connection into one intimate night.

Acute Inflections, the New York based jazz and R&B duo made up of vocalist Elasea Douglas and bassist Sadiki Pierre, will bring their signature show to the area on June 27. Known for their elegant, Harlem Renaissance inspired performances, the duo has built a loyal following across the country by transforming traditional concerts into immersive, emotionally rich experiences.

Their journey began in Brooklyn, where the two met and discovered a shared vision for music that goes beyond sound. Over more than a decade of performing together, they have refined a style that combines smooth vocals, upright bass, clever storytelling, and a touch of comedy. The result is a show that feels both sophisticated and deeply personal.

What makes their performances stand out is not just the music, but the atmosphere they create. Audience members are not simply spectators. They are part of the evening. From the moment guests arrive, there is a sense that this will be something different. The setting is intentionally intimate. The pacing allows for conversation, laughter, and reflection. The duo often interacts with the audience, weaving spontaneous moments into the show that make each performance unique.

Their repertoire spans jazz standards, soulful originals, and creative reinterpretations of familiar songs. But the real magic lies in how they deliver it. A song may begin as a quiet, heartfelt moment and build into something powerful and uplifting. A story shared between songs might draw laughter, only to lead into a deeply moving performance that leaves the room silent in reflection.

One defining moment early in their career helped shape the direction of their work. Performing at a jazz festival, they followed a high energy band and initially felt unsure of how their more intimate style would be received. When they began one of their original songs, the room grew quiet. At the end, there was no immediate applause. Instead, they looked out to see an audience visibly moved, some even in tears. That moment revealed the depth of connection their music could create, and it has guided their approach ever since.

Since then, Acute Inflections has performed for audiences across the United States and internationally, including appearances connected to major corporations, public figures, and cultural institutions. Yet despite their growing reach, they have remained committed to maintaining the close, personal feel that defines their shows.

Rapid City offers a fitting backdrop for this kind of experience. Known for its blend of natural beauty and cultural charm, the area provides a setting where an intimate, story driven performance can resonate deeply. The duo sees each new city not just as a stop on a tour, but as an opportunity to connect with a new community.

Their shows often attract a diverse audience, from longtime jazz lovers to those simply looking for a memorable night out. Couples, groups of friends, and even solo attendees find themselves drawn into the shared energy of the room. By the end of the evening, it is not uncommon for strangers to feel like they have experienced something meaningful together.

In addition to the music and storytelling, there is a strong sense of intention behind what Acute Inflections does. Their performances are designed to offer a space where people can slow down, engage with one another, and leave feeling uplifted. In a world that often moves quickly, their show provides a rare opportunity to be fully present.

For those in Rapid City looking for something beyond the typical night out, this event offers a chance to experience live music in a way that is both refined and deeply human. It is an evening where elegance meets authenticity, where laughter and emotion coexist, and where every note carries a sense of purpose.

Tickets and additional details about the June 27 performance can be found at acuteinflections.com.

I’m looking forward to being there.
