Greetings.

Welcome to the launch of The South Dakota Standard! Tom Lawrence and I will bring you thoughts and ideas concerning issues pertinent to the health and well-being of our political culture. Feel free to let us know what you are thinking.

Moderate Republicans and Democrats have a decision to make

Moderate Republicans and Democrats have a decision to make. Are they going to stick with their now weak party labels or are they going to break ranks?

The U.S. Senate race includes the incumbent, Senator Mike Rounds. His votes have supported the numerous cutbacks in funding which have negatively affected all of us in one way or another. His silence on numerous important issues is beyond concerning. He wants another term.

The Democrats had a candidate who decided to step aside. Lots of reasons and some back stories to that decision.

Then there is the independent Brian Bengs. He has a solid military career. Was a JAG lawyer. He has been a college professor. He is assertive without being obnoxious. He is listening to us. He wants to take what he is hearing and be OUR voice in the Senate.

Here is the math: Democrats have about 130,000 members. Republicans have a little over 300,000. Independents and no party affiliation voters are about 150,000. 20,000 more than Democrats, and about half as many as Republicans.

Most people I listen to want change in Washington. They are tired of the daily/hourly drama. Their ability to pay bills is harder now because of continuing inflation. They are not happy about tariffs and cuts in programs which help us.

If we truly want change in Washington, Democrats will have to vote in large numbers for Bengs. Same for Independents. An important component is Republicans, many of whom are not happy with Rounds, will have to cross the forbidden line.

Pols done by reputable firms show Bengs either slightly ahead or within the “margin of error.”   It is possible an Independent can win this year.

In Nebraska and Idaho, the Independents running for U.S. Senate are both within the “margin of error.”

If Bengs and the other two can win, there will be five Independents in the U.S. Senate. Enough numbers that both parties will have to pay attention to them.

Voting really matters now. More than ever. Remember in the race for Mayor of Sioux Falls this summer, only FOUR votes separated the top two candidates.

I am optimistic that positive change is coming to Washington. It would be wonderful if South Dakota, you and I are part it.

So, to my diehard Democrat friends, hold your nose if you must and vote for change. To my Republican friends, we are in this mess because of leaders in what used to be a proud, honest, compassionate party. You may need to hold your nose too, and vote for change.
