Greetings.

Welcome to the launch of The South Dakota Standard! Tom Lawrence and I will bring you thoughts and ideas concerning issues pertinent to the health and well-being of our political culture. Feel free to let us know what you are thinking.

Trump’s wildly abusive and profane Easter post, erratic actions and words just further proof he needs to be removed

Trump’s wildly abusive and profane Easter post, erratic actions and words just further proof he needs to be removed

The most recent abusive and profane message from Donald Trump for Iran is proof that he has finally met his Waterloo. He has failed.

Throughout his life, he’s always been able to spin, to repeat lies so often they become normalized … to ultimately always get his way.

If he were not so uneducated and ignorant, he would have instinctively understood that Iran is the original root of the Persian Empire. Along with that comes a great deal of pride and tradition. Buoyed by the professional precision of our military incursion into (by comparison, small) Venezuela, Trump ignorantly believed he could do it again.

But our military does not walk on water. It can only do so much. The political realm is beyond its ken. And Trump has finally made a mistake he cannot recover from … hence his increasingly shrill demands.

He's beginning to know that he’s failed. For the first time in his life, this is a situation he can’t bully, brag or threaten his way out of. And he put himself in it.

The No Kings protests throughout this red state of South Dakota (and, actually, across the planet) showed clearly that there are thousands here and millions overall who reject what is happening. Here in South Dakota, signs read NO CROWN FOR THE CLOWN, Democracy Not Dictatorship, a Not a Paid Protestor, Vets Against Bone Spurs, REGIME CHANGE is needed here!

All of this ends when enough of us say no. And thousands of others including one profane flag, on par with his latest tweet to Iran.

We should fear what he does next, or tries to do. Another top general may end up fired, since they will certainly refuse his orders to destroy civilian infrastructure, the same kind of “illegal order” that Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) et al. spoke of, which caused Trump to call for their death.

It is well past time for Sen. John Thune to begin living up to his position. He could still come out the hero, but he needs to use his position as Senate majority leader to actually do some leading.

Whether it’s another impeachment or the 25th Amendment or, hopefully, a War Powers Act with some teeth in it (c’mon John, be that guy), this president must be stopped. Full stop.
